A convenient app to organize and find book-sharing events

We were tasked with designing an impactful and efficient mobile app. After brainstorming, we developed Meet & Read, an app to organize and discover book-sharing events. It centralizes event information, catalogs books, and connects users like a book club.

Problem

Information about book-related events is fragmented, making it difficult for users to discover and participate in them effectively. How can we centralize this information to enhance user engagement and community participation?

Why would Meet & Read work?

  • Provides personalized recommendations for book-related activities.

  • Facilitates social connectivity and interactive book clubs.

  • Offers features for both casual and avid readers, including live readings and book swap matchmaking.

How do you know it is Meet & Read?

Before designing the interface, we branded Meet & Read with a clean, modern yellow, brown, and green look to ensure easy recognition. The app focuses on centralizing book-sharing events, enhancing community engagement, and offering features like live readings and interactive book clubs.

Design Process: User Testing for Meet&Read

Design Process: User Testing for Meet&Read

  • Surveyed with 30 participants, primarily university students aged 18-25.

  • Selected avid readers enthusiastic about book events for prototype testing.

  • Tasks included joining 'Waterloo Book Swap,' creating a book-sharing event, and navigating to a message.

  • Used the 'Think Aloud' method for real-time feedback.

  • Testing was conducted at participants' homes on their phones.

  • Post-walkthrough interviews focused on navigation, favourite aspects, potential app usage, and suggestions.

  • Identified strengths and weaknesses: centralized event information, social connectivity, navigation challenges, and need for clearer instructions.

Final Iterations

  • Enhanced intuitive navigation and provided clearer instructions.

  • Improved usability for younger audiences and diverse user groups.

  • Increased community engagement features.

  • Allowed users to personalize widgets and layouts.

  • Continued iteration on event management, search functionality, and social features based on user feedback.

  • Addressed navigation difficulties and ensured consistency in design elements.

  • Added login options through platforms like Google and Facebook for easier access.

  • Introduced features for setting event reminders and notifications to keep users engaged.
